Somewhere in the mountains of Romania you’ll find the most amazing road you’ll ever see, and one of the most dangerous roads to drive.
The Transfagarasan Highway was built as a strategic military route between 1970 and 1974. This road was built to ensure quick military access across the mountains in the event of the Soviet attempted to invade Romania. The road climbs to 2,034 meters in altitude.
The most spectacular view is from the north. The road seems like every great racetrack in the world has been combined together to create an amazing combination of winding curves with steep hairpin turns, long –s-curves and sharp descents to create the perfect automotive driving experience.
This is considered to be one of the best roads in the world to drive.
The road is usually closed from late October until late June due to bad snow conditions. The road has a total of five tunnels and an outstanding landscape.
For anyone who is a thrill seeker this 100 km drive is truly an unforgettable experience. The average speed is maximum 40 km/h because of its countless turns. Along the route there are 27 viaducts and bridges and the longest road tunnel in Romania-877 meters, which passes through the Platin Mountains.
Just one word of caution this road is not for the fainthearted and is a scary drive in most places. Some sections of the road have no rail guards with sheer drops of over 1200 feet. You better check your breaks over these mountains because if they fail on any of the winding curves without barriers, your number will be up. If you are in Romania between June and September, the Transfagarasan road is an absolute must place to visit for an amazing and unforgettable experience.
