Mentors

10 Reasons why you should Harness the Power of your Mentors

Talent is the root on which success grows. This talent cannot foster unless nurtured, polished and perfected by selfless teachers and mentors.

Who is a Mentor?

He or she is an experienced and trusted advisor to someone, who teaches him to better his skills.

Gopal Krishna Gokhale was a mentor to Mahatma Gandhi and in turn Gandhi was a mentor to Martin Luther King Jr. In the same way Socrates was a mentor to Plato and Plato was the mentor to Socrates.

Mentors

I am trying to say that a good mentor is quintessential to harness your full potential. You and your talent are handicapped without him.

Harry Potter could never had killed Voldemort unless Dumbledore made sure as a mentor that he was perfectly ready by polishing his skills and guiding him wisely towards achieving his destiny.

But wait! It requires an effort from the mentee too. Yes, only when you are in the right frame of mind, only when your efforts are not clouded by pride, judgement and ego, only then can you truly learn.

You may ask that in today’s world one can learn all things by himself with the resources available… then why need a mentor? Well then,

10 Reasons Why You Need Mentors

Here they are:

1) They have more experience to share.

A mentor has seen it all and done it all. He will show to the right path and guide you on to handle all the possible situations you can face. Knowing his experience will make you more mature than others and you will automatically have a competitive edge.

2) They can observe and assess you better.

You cannot observe and assess yourself while you hone your skills and capabilities. It is impossible. A mentor is the one who knows your skill who can keep track of its progress, point out and remove the flaws and polish the rough edges.

3) They realise your potential better than others.

Your skill is unique. Others don’t possess it so, they cannot realise how far can it go but A mentor can. He has been involved with it all his life and knows the scope and future of your talent. Only he can provide you with the correct estimate of hat you can do.

4) They appreciate your talent when others demotivate you.

The world is cruel. Your talent when unknown will find more haters than lovers. People will try to demotivate you, only people like mentors appreciate your skills and fill you with the determination to perfect it and achieve success.

5) Their connections become your connections.

Apart from talent, you also need to make good connections and meet the right people to achieve success. When you have an experienced mentor, you automatically get the benefit of knowing his contacts. He knows the right places to promote or shall I say market your talent… where you will get recognition.

His friends become your friends and ultimately you reap the benefits.

6) As a mentee, you are as good as his son/daughter.

A good mentor will treat you as his own child. He will groom you in the best suitable way, his prime focus will become the perfection of your skills and the realization of your success.

Soon you will begin to see a much greater figure in him and realise his importance in the making of your path for success and glory.

7) They help you focus.

When you are distracted due to reasons unknown, they will be the ones who make you come to terms with your real goals and get back on track. Mentors keep reminding you of your true identity so that you never get lost.

8) They know how to motivate you.

When you develop a relationship with a mentor, it reaches to a level of professional as well as personal intimacy that the mentor will find the solutions to all your problems. He will be the one who knows how to motivate you in times of failure and depression.

Your mentor is the one who keeps you running.

9) You inherit their wisdom and knowledge.

This is an added advantage when you have a mentor. At the age of 15, you possess the maturity of a 20 year old only because of the guidance and experienced share with you by your mentor.

10) They help you face competition and pressure.

They have faced it themselves. They know how to handle those nerve-wrecking situations and this will benefit you when you yourself are in the same situation. Your mentor’s words of advice will help you come out with flying colours and leave rivals behind.

Endnote

A mentor helps you achieve extraordinary levels of success but only if you allow him or her to do so. If you will bring ego in between along with other distractions like reacting negatively to criticism, then you will ultimately fail in realising your own potential and missing a chance to achieve extraordinary things.
