A story by author Catherine Pulsifer makes much sense:
A farmer won the first prize at the country fair for his huge radish that was the exact shape and size of a quart of a milk bottle. Many were curious as to how the farmer was able to grow this radish that was the exact shape of a milk bottle. Finally, one gentleman went up to the farmer and asked the question. The farmer replied “It was easy. I got the seed growing and then I put it into the milk bottle. It had nowhere else to go.”
Limiting ourselves and being bound by the circumstances is what we all do in our daily life. The boundaries we set ourselves is what molds us into what we become. That is the way we feel is right and keep going on like that.
“A man is but the product of his thoughts. What he thinks, he becomes.” Mahatma Gandhi
A person is simply confined by the walls he builds around himself. Sometimes you do not even know that the boundaries exist as they could be set by your environment, parents, or society. It is something which has always been there.
Like the story of the two mice goes; two mice who fell in a pail of milk. One mouse gave up and drowned, but the other kept on swimming and churned the milk until it became cream and he could get out.
Humans also accept their fate as this is what they deserve or just limit themselves that if they do something different bad will happen. People fear change and failure and are not confident in dealing with it.
We are all knowledgeable and have brains which we can use better that the less fortunate ones. We are all talented and adaptable enough to accept and change with the surroundings. What we do with our life are the limits set in our mind. If we stop limiting ourselves and use our imaginations, the possibilities become limitless. You will see and feel the transformation that can happen with a small change in you.
What happens when we stop limiting ourselves?
Dreaming big:
People tend to be scared and very limited with their thoughts. They feel content with what they have and are scared if something is changed. They limit themselves from dreaming big and setting big goals in life.
You need to stop the limitations which you impose on yourself then only you can see the bigger picture. You have to believe in yourself that yes, I can do this and it is you who can achieve that. There is no spoon feeding at the adult table. It is you who has to set his boundaries free and dream big to live the better and successful life.
Improving skills:
When a person has the self-belief that he can achieve anything, he will strive to attain betterment in everything. With time, knowledge, and experience, we learn to fight our weakness, and once we overcome our weakness we gain the skills to a better viewpoint in life, and there is no stopping after that.
Overcome shyness:
Being shy is one of the biggest factors in limiting ourselves from communicating with others. The sense of social anxiety can be due to lack of self-confidence and self-esteem. When we stop limiting ourselves, we are free to talk to others freely without thinking low or embarrassed. At the starting, it is always weird to suddenly come across a random stranger and talk but if you practice and make an initiative, you will feel much confident and get to meet people from different walks of life.
Getting things done:
If you think you are 70% productive, you will do 70% or less than that. By freeing your mind from the work pressure and instead of procrastinating or having self-doubt, you are focused, motivated and self-dedicated; gradually, you can reach your full potential. As the saying goes “Aim for the moon; even if you fail you might land among the stars.”
Living in the present:
Taking stress about what will happen in the future and regretting making past decisions will always hamper your current life and situation. Try to live your life now by not being dependent on the future or wasting thinking about the past. As we all know that what’s been done in the past cannot be undone and no one can see the future so it is best to live in the ‘now’ and enjoying every moment we can.
Action oriented:
Being free from your mental restrictions. Your mind actually starts to function at its fullest. You get more creative and effective in your day to day life. Being non-restrictive helps you to be confident and take the initiative in making decisions. You can act more wisely and work more efficiently in your different domains of life.
Eliminating depression:
Taking stress, not enjoying life, cursing, not being happy, getting agitated and blaming others will always end you in depression also suffering others around you. You need to free your mind from these petty thoughts of stress and start to enjoy the company of family, friends, and colleague. You need to realize that there is much more happiness than being surrounded with just your work and taking stress leading to depression.
In this world of people with various thoughts, beliefs, and superstitions, you cannot limit yourself or by thinking what others are going to think about you. You need, to be honest with yourself to expand your comfort zone, to accept change and believing change is good, exploring different possibilities, taking courage in what you do and being confident in taking small risks in life. All this can help make your environment an improved place, and you can make it your world by living your dreams, your life, in your way.
