6 Reasons Why You Suck At Golf

Golf is not an easy game. Unless you’re one of those types who play golf once a year on a whim, you need to get your bearings together and learn how not to suck at golf.

The real secret to playing great golf is to know how to learn golfing.

Here are some reasons why you suck at golf.

why you suck at golf

1) Lack of Commitment

If you don’t have the commitment to improve your game, you’re not likely to become better ever. Commitment is nothing but a decision to pursue a certain goal. Tell that brain that you’re committed to doing or achieving a certain thing and see the magic beginning to work.

You’re automatically led to achieve that thing. No external circumstances seem difficult anymore because you’ve the mind set on achieving something.

The decision to commit makes the brain work on autopilot. You’re automatically geared towards achieving that goal.

2) Learning to Golf is a Process

Learning is a process and a process implies changing your body and mind according to a new pattern. Ingraining a new pattern within the system takes time and most often, people don’t want to devote time.

If you suck at golf, it’s probably because you’re disinclined to internalise the process of golfing.

Initially, you’re going to hit a lot of bad golf shots but understand that this is a part of the process. If you want to become better at golf, learn to focus on the swing. It means that you shouldn’t worry much about where the ball goes but on the swing mechanism.

A lot of self-discipline is necessary to hit beautiful crisp shots but over time, it becomes easier. It’s all a process and you’ve to start somewhere.

3) Lack of Practice

Practice makes perfect!

It’s as simple as that. If you don’t want to suck at golf, you need to practice and become better. Often, the word ‘practice’ makes people frown. I don’t understand why.

Learning anything is a process and you have to practice the process to become better. Begin with scheduling a structure to your practice. Following a structure becomes easier. A structure is usually a list of activities scheduled to be performed at specific intervals. For instance, if you’ve an appointment with a doctor, you don’t miss it, right? If you have regular sessions with a therapist, you don’t miss it either, right?

Why? This is because it serves an end. Similarly, if you don’t want to suck at golf, start scheduling sessions and follow them religiously.

4) You’ve Lost Interest

Unless you do something with great passion, it soon develops into a chore, something that you have to do without any perceptible interest.

If you think of golfing as a chore, it’s the reason why you started to suck at it in the first place. Sometimes it also happens that repetition breeds a sense of boredom. It doesn’t mean you have lost interest in golfing, just that it’s time to bring in some change.

Golfing is not a predictable game. Every day and every game is different and they teach you things all the time. Sometimes the stint goes bad and other times, you play exceptionally well.

A bad game of golf can make you angry and disinterested but don’t give up. Learn new methods and strategies to keep improving.

Golfing gives a fun experience even if it’s sometimes maddening.

5) Not Building up Fundamentals

A skill requires knowledge and knowledge demands that you’re aware of its fundamentals. Everything that you do is governed by a set of fundamentals. Not knowing them will hamper your progress.

In golf, knowing about impact position, grip, follow-through, stance, takeaway, balance and others constitute the fundamentals. If you don’t know about them, no doubt you suck at golf.

Get hold of a book on golf and start reading. After reading, practice them too. Adhere to solid golfing fundamentals to become a better golfer. Solid fundamentals give your game a boost. The game of golf is precise and requires precise skills. Goofing up in the beginning is acceptable but please, do get hold of golf fundamentals before you play another game.

6) Not Knowing how to Swing

The main reason why you probably suck at golf is because you don’t know how to swing. Get the swing right, you get 80% of the game right. Learning is a biological process. If you start hitting golf balls at full speed while still in the learning phase, it will be counter-productive.

The desire to learn is an instinctive process. Initially, your mind is going to hate the change. It will try to screw up your thoughts but don’t give up. Take one lesson at a time.

Endnote

Golf is a really amazing and interesting game. You probably suck at golf because of these six reasons. Deal with them and become a better golfer.
