How many times have you told someone to live in the moment or to concentrate at the moment? Probably, you have done it a hundred of times.
Now, the real question is – do you follow this advice in your own life?
Yes, living in the moment sounds easier than done. We find it incredibly difficult to enjoy the moment. We either spend a lot of time replaying past events or planning too much for the future.
Thus, we miss the great moments that are happening right now. We often forget to enjoy the journey by thinking too hard about the destination. We don’t take the time to focus on the moment. This is sad, as we never know how many more minutes we have left in our life.
However, it is recommended to have some future planning. Setting goals is crucial if we want to achieve something remarkable in our personal and professional lives. By setting realistic targets and taking steps to reach them is a powerful way to become responsible. When we implement this kind of goal-setting, it gives meaning to our lives because, in the attainment of these goals, we show dedication, a strong work ethic, and perseverance.
Nowadays, our society has become a society so enamored with planning. Everyone is talking about building a healthy future, but what about building for now? We all strive for contentment and happiness, and to manifest this joy, we should start focusing on the moment rather than the future.
When we think too much about the past and the future, it mostly fills our minds up with regrets, stress, and negativity. Read below to know why you must focus on the moment.
#1 You can only control the present moment:
It does not really matter how much you plan, you never know for sure what life has stored for your future. The only way you will come to know when you are at that moment. You only have control over the moment that you are experiencing right now.
It is up to you whether you are going to enjoy the moment or loathe the moment. You can also choose to ignore the moment completely and waste it away, but either way, you can fully control the present moment.
#2 Each moment is a gift:
“Yesterday is history, tomorrow is a mystery, but today is a gift. That is why it is called the present”.
No quote can truer than this one. There is no guarantee on how many more moments you will be fortunate to experience. You do not even know if you are going be alive tomorrow. Our next moment is not guaranteed, so it is wise to take advantage of the time that you are in.
You can only experience this zest for life if you are focusing on the present moment. So, do not take moments for granted and cherish each moment that you are experiencing.
#3 You will worry less:
Thinking way too much about the past and the past will only give birth to stress in your life. Although sometimes a bit of pressure pushes you to do better, the stress caused by not focusing on the moment can adversely affect your physical, mental, and emotional health.
Over planning can cause unnecessary stress when the planning does not let you live in the moment. Introspect your life and make small changes which will allow you to stay more focused on each moment.
Observe when your mind begins to focus on the future instead of the present moment. Ask yourself whether this planning is needed or not.
#4 Plans often don’t work out the way you want:
This is a reality that you can’t refuse to believe even if you want to. Can you remember how many times have you planned something for weeks but in the end, it didn’t turn out the way you wanted it to? Did you get very disappointed?
We all got too excited for that picnic at the park, but on that day, it rained heavily. It is an undeniable fact that plans fail. No matter how perfect the plan, it is bound to fail sometimes. Such is life, it is unfair. Planning every step of your life is not only impossible but also can make you go crazy.
The more you plan, the more likely you are to become upset and disappointed when those plans go in vain. I am not also suggesting that you should not plan at all. Go ahead and make plans if that help you eventually but don’t stop focusing on the moment.
Just when your plans do not work out the way you wanted, you should be able to accept it. Sometimes you just must let go and let life take its own course.
#5 Focusing the moment makes you happier:
I am a firm believer of the phrase, “True happiness comes from within.”
Focusing in the moment is one of the sure shot methods that you should adopt to generate genuine happiness in your life. As proved by several surveys, living in the present moment is one of the most efficient ways to one’s wellbeing.
Too much long-term planning is going to pull you back from enjoying the fun of now. Don’t prevent yourself from experiencing contentment and happiness. Practice focusing in the moment and see how it makes you feel better. Plan when you need to but don’t lose sight of the present moment.
#6 You will be free of regrets and grudges:
When you start focusing on the moment, you don’t get any time to dwell on the past. Regrets about what you did or what you should have done will fade away, and you also can let go of grudges and forgive those easily who had done wrong to you.
#7 Achieving peace of mind:
Once you stop worrying and holding grudges against people, you will become calmer and reach a peaceful state of mind. This is not only great for your mental and emotional health, but it will have a wonderful effect on your physical health.
#8 You will feel more content:
One of the main rewards of focusing on the moment is that you won’t be thinking about the time that has passed by or what you have to do in future. You will be satisfied to experience as it unfolds before you.
#9 Better relationships:
When you are happier, and at peace with yourself, you will emit positivity. Your friends and loved ones will see a change in you and automatically appreciate you more. So, your relationship with your family and friends will get stronger than ever.
#10 You will feel freer:
After you start focusing in the moment, you will never feel tied down by worries, past experiences, and expectations from the future. You will feel free like a bird by taking risks and doing whatever you want.
Remember you only have control over the moment that you are living in. The moment right now should be appreciated like a valued possession. Let go of the past, stop worrying about the future and start focusing on the moment today to live a happier and better life.
